ACTIVITIES

South Luangwa is a vast, unspoiled ecosystem of diverse habitats and prolific birds and wildlife. Highlights include incredible walking safaris, water excursions, photographic opportunities from the new hide, and the best day and night game viewing from our fleet of custom-made Land Cruisers. Time is measured only by the sun’s position, and the eyes are charmed by the quality of the ever-changing light.

Game Drives

Game drives in our luxurious 4×4 safari vehicles occur in the cool early morning and again in the late afternoon. Guided by our knowledgeable rangers, these drives offer outstanding photo opportunities, up close and personal game viewing, and an intense connection with Africa.

Morning drives start early and include coffee and snacks. In contrast, evening drives include a stop for nibbles and cocktails. The return to camp is a thrilling experience in the dark, during which we use ethical, red-filtered spotlights to reveal the nocturnal wildlife and secrets of the bush.

A game drive is an expedition of hope and anticipation into the natural habitat of the wildlife of Zambia. South Luangwa is known as the “Valley of the Leopard”, so the chances of sighting one of these elusive predators are high. See herds of elephants and Cape buffalo swimming between the many tiny islands on the river and get up close to sleepy lions dozing in the sun or a tower of giraffes stretching to reach the juiciest leaves from the top of a tree. View the mesmerising patterns of Crawshay’s zebra, and you will understand why they are known collectively as a dazzle of zebra.

Walking Safari

Follow in the footsteps of the 18th-century explorers and do a walking safari in South Luangwa, where the wildlife roams wild and free. Safe in the capable hands of a highly trained safari guide and an armed Government National Parks scout, these experts will lead you on a sensory adventure and enthral you with stories you will never forget. South Luangwa is home to Zambia’s walking safari, the most immersive safari experience and an exhilarating sensory adventure. Track leopard, giraffe, wild dog or elephant as you walk through groves of Ebony trees, alongside dry river beds and through the open savannah, and the rangers reveal the intricate complexity of this landscape’s insects, birds, and plants.

Birding

South Luangwa is a birder’s paradise with 378 species recorded. Listen for the iconic sound of Africa, the distinct call of the fish eagle perched in a tree, or the comical guttural croak of the spoonbill wading in the shallows. Spot the colourful woodlands and malachite kingfishers and look out for the striking pied, brown, giant and hooded birds from the same family. Osprey and African skimmers migrate here, and resident river birds include darters, egrets, storks, and cormorants.
